Just how good are these aggressive lil buggers on the hook and on the plate? Ive heard they are good on neither compared to the calamari squid.

Also, what do people prefer as bait - a calamari squid or one of those brown cuttlefish things you always catch when targeting squid? I have seen a hook up to a big king on a whole cuttlefish and been intrigued with their effectiveness ever since. Today I caught one and released it Do Arrow Squid Cut It As Food And Bait? (6)

Hi,

if i had seen a big king caught on a cuttlefish i'd be jigging like made until i had one with a hook through its mantle and hoping for an even BIGGER king <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Do Arrow Squid Cut It As Food And Bait? (13)' />

arrows are a poor second to calamari on the plate, however i cook up the tentacles in a dish covered with aluminium foil in the oven, just drizzle olive oil and some oregano and let it cook in its own juices for a good 20~30min. comes out soft as and taste alright too. You just gotta know how to cook them <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

Have heard that they dont eat as well..........dont know about their bait qualities, although i have been told once that cuttlefish are a much better bait, as they are tougher........pickers dont eat it as quick........

Hi,

Arrows are very common offshore in Victoria when fishing for sharks, as are the couta.

I have caught a few arrows 2kms from the Altona boat ramp during winter Do Arrow Squid Cut It As Food And Bait? (32)

I've only caught a couple of small arrows in my time and from memory did not taste too bad, a little tougher than calamari. I think most squid when purchased as rings both at the market and at the fish shop are arrows. The price pretty much gives it away. I'm also pretty sure my local malay restaurant uses arrows in their spicy calamari dish and they do a pretty good job.

Around this subject I had a chat with my uncle who has been involved in the fresh seafood business for many years and he gave me the advice to choose frozen squid tubes when buying arrows to eat or at the market as he believes these are fresher because they have been processed and frozen aboard a ship. I use allot of arrows for bait and would like others opinions on whole fresh/frozen tube bait experience.

Also my uncle told me a story regarding someone who purchased large numbers of arrows to pickle - He used to prefer the pink ones (unfresh) because they pickle the best!!

Hi Snapperman, I agree about the price at market for arrows vs calamari, arrows are $5-6 per kilo, calamari are $15-20. I think most people wouldn't know the difference, and would buy arrows because they're cheaper. In my opinion, calas are well worth the extra $ (not that anyone on this site should be buying squid at the market!!)

Also Hunter killer I marinate my arrows in a little olive oil and garlic (and chilli if you're game), for 2 hours before cooking.

Jaz

I use small arrows for bait - Californian squid they are called, and I know of at least one person whom caught an 83cm Mulloway on one, but i am yet to catch a fish on them. Most shop bought squid (like frozen in boxes style) is arrow squid - most likely imported from overseas, and i dont think it tastes too bad. The markets in SA all sell southern calamari - i am yet to find arrow squid for sale - its not very common at all in SA......

I think that's mainly what we get in my neck of the woods, is the Arrow Squid. I generally enjoy eating them, but have REALLY wondered what the bigger squid taste like.

hehehe, arrow squid has been my staple bait since i started fishing and i've caught heaps of fish on it. If i want to soften it a little i smack it a few times with a snapper sinker.
