Day 1 – The most important Berlin Attractions in Mitte

1. Reichstag Building & Government Quarter – Berlin sightseeing

All German citizens should visit the Reichstag building and the government district in Berlin. Here you will find the heart of German democracy and an important part of our past.

We strongly recommend that you take a combined tour. The tours last around 2 to 2 1/2 hours and start in the government quarter. On the tour, you’ll first learn about building projects that didn’t go so well.

The Lüders House is leaking, the Chancellor’s Office has water damage, and the cellar of the Bundesrat also needs to be waterproofed. BER Airport sends its regards.

But of course you also learn positive things. Most of the buildings are built sustainably and efficiently. And the dome of the Reichstag building is particularly impressive. The dome functions as a daylight system and even has a chimney function.

A beautiful idea is the work of art by the artist Dani Karavan from Tel Aviv. He has engraved the 19 fundamental rights articles of the Basic Law with lasers to be read on glass panes. According to our tour guide, this emphasises the fragility of the Basic Law.

The continuing tour of the Reichstag building begins with a security check and then leads you through the spacious entrance area and up a wide staircase into the plenary chamber of the Bundestag. The tour guide says goodbye here and a spokesperson for the building takes over the tour from here.

From Wednesdays to Fridays, you can take a look at the political events from the visitors’ gallery. You sit in the gallery with other groups for a total of 45 minutes and learn many interesting things about the history of the Reichstag building and the German parliament and can ask questions yourself.

What impressed us most was that the eagle behind the lectern, which you also see on the news, is 58 square metres in size. So it’s as big as a small flat! Yet it doesn’t seem that huge at all.

Then take the lift to the roof terrace, where you can enjoy an impressive view of the government district and the city of Berlin. One highlight is the glass dome designed by Sir Norman Foster, which offers you a 360-degree view of Berlin.

You get an audio guide here, but it’s rather boring. If you have a reservation, you can have a coffee or a bite to eat at the Käfer DACHGARTEN-RESTAURANT.

The government district includes not only the Reichstag building, but also other important government buildings such as the Federal Chancellery and the Paul Löbe House.

A guided tour gives you the opportunity to learn more about German government and politics, and it’s something everyone should take.

When you think of Berlin, the Brandenburg Gate certainly comes to mind. It is only a stone’s throw from the Reichstag to the Brandenburg Gate. The city’s landmark is not only a tourist magnet, but also an important historical site.

The gate was built in 1791 and served as the entrance gate to the city. During the National Socialist era it was misused as a symbol of power and after the Second World War it was a border crossing between East and West Berlin.

Today, the Brandenburg Gate is a symbol of German unity and a place where important political events take place. If you’re in Berlin, be sure to visit the Brandenburg Gate and learn about its history and significance.

Why was it so empty in the photo? We had about two milliseconds and a large group just left the picture. Otherwise there are always crowds of people there.

The Memorial to the Murdered Jews in Berlin, also known as the Holocaust Memorial or the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, is a memorial commemorating the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust.

It is located near the Brandenburg Gate and consists of a gigantic labyrinth of 2,711 concrete blocks arranged in an undulating pattern over an area of 19,000 square metres.

You absolutely have to walk through here yourself. The height of the blocks varies, creating an atmosphere of disorientation and isolation. We immediately felt a sense of trepidation.

The memorial was designed by US architect Peter Eisenman to commemorate the horrors of the Holocaust and to give visitors an experience of grief and remembrance.

Beneath the memorial is an information centre that highlights the history of the Holocaust and the suffering of the victims.

Although some have argued that the memorial is too abstract and does not sufficiently condemn the crimes of the Nazis, many see it as a powerful symbol of remembrance for the victims.

5. Arminiusmarkthalle – Berlin Sights

Stop for lunch at the Arminiusmarkthalle. The market hall is a historic gem from the late 19th century. You’ll find a good selection of regional and international food, ranging from organic products to exotic specialities.

At the bars and restaurants you can enjoy a wide variety of dishes and drinks. The best thing to do is to try them out.

6. KaDeWe Luxury Shopping & Dining – Berlin Attractions

KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens) is one of Berlin’s flagship addresses and is known as the largest department stores’ in Europe. It’s a luxury shopping paradise spread over six floors, with a wide range of designer clothes and delicatessen.

Yes, it’s a bit fancy, but the food court in particular is something to behold, we think. Here you can get everything from Thai and Israeli to burgers and pizza. But it’s not cheap either.

7. Bikini Shopping – Berlin Sights

Berlin in 3 to 7 days - The ultimate city guide with 41 great sights everyone should have visited! [+map] (14)

But maybe Bikini is more your thing. It’s an innovative shopping centre near the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. Here you will find boutiques, pop-up stores and concept stores.

A highlight of Bikini Berlin is the view of the Berlin Zoo that you have from there. We think the Bikini is nicely done, but we always have the feeling that it is very empty. At least during our visits.

Near Bikini there are two hip spots that can be found in the same building: Neni and Monkey Bar. Neni is a cool restaurant that is beautifully decorated. Monkey Bar is on the same floor and has a stunning view of the city. You can enjoy really great sunsets here.

The bar offers a very good selection of co*cktails and snacks. However, we can never stay there for long because the seating is very uncomfortable. Maybe on purpose. Otherwise, it’s cool to have a drink. The bartenders know their trade and are happy to show it.

9. Optional nearby: Palace of Tears, Mendelson Remise, Gendarmenmarkt (currently under construction), Lafayette Gallery

If you have time and feel like it: Nearby are the Tränenpalast, the Mendelson Remise, the Gendarmenmarkt and the Lafayette Galerie.

The Tränenpalast is a museum dedicated to the history of German division, housed in a former border station. It offers an insight into people’s lives during the time of divided Germany and displays an impressive collection of objects and documents.

The Mendelson Remise is a historic building in the Jewish quarter that is now used as an exhibition space for Jewish art and culture.

Gendarmenmarkt is a historic square surrounded by impressive buildings such as the Konzerthaus and the French and German Cathedrals. The square is currently a construction site due to renovations, but it remains an important cultural venue in the city.

Lafayette Galerie is a luxury shopping centre in Berlin offering a wide range of brands and designer products.

Day 2 – Berlin Wall and Museum Island

The Mauerpark is located in Prenzlauer Berg and is best known for its flea market. Every Sunday, it attracts many visitors who come in search of bargains.

You can find everything from vintage clothing and jewellery to furniture and handicrafts. We were particularly impressed by the artworks from ZoZoville and immediately stocked up on pictures to take home.

The park itself is also used for relaxing – with its green meadows, a playground and a skateboard ramp. We were able to watch a few graffiti artists at work on the wall on the hill.

You’ve probably heard a lot about the Berlin Wall. But do you know its history and cultural significance? The Wall was not only a symbol of the division of Germany, but also a place of resistance and solidarity.

Many people risked their lives to visit or support friends and family on the other side.

The Berlin Wall Memorial is free of charge and stretches along the former border on Bernauer Strasse. Take your time and explore the documentation centre with a view of the memorial. Here you will get a good impression of the situation at the time.

Walk along Bernauer Strasse to the “Chapel of Reconciliation” and go to the memorial called “Victims of the Berlin Wall Window of Remembrance”. The film in the memorial’s visitor centre is also worth seeing.

12. Kulturbrauerei Prenzlauer Berg – Berlin Attractions

In Prenzlauer Berg you will also find the Kulturbrauerei, a former brewery site that is now used as a venue for cultural and artistic events. The buildings were restored and converted in the 1990s to make room for cinemas, theatres, bars, clubs, galleries and restaurants. It’s best to keep an eye out for events.

13. Berlin Underworlds – Berlin Holiday

The Berlin Underworlds offer various tours that take you on a voyage of discovery through the city’s mysterious tunnels and bunkers. You should reckon on two hours for a tour.

The “Dark Worlds” tour, for example, takes you through the dark and hidden corners of Berlin’s underground stations, while the “Traces of War” tour takes visitors to the remnants of the air raid shelters and bunkers of World War II.

Other tours include an exploration of Berlin’s sewage system and a discovery tour of the former “ghost station” of the Nordbahnhof underground station.

Note: You need to book your tour well in advance here! On our last visit to Berlin, we were unfortunately too late and everything was fully booked, but the Berlin Underworlds are a tip from many of our readers.

On Museum Island, you should visit the Berlin Cathedral. The cathedral is a truly magnificent church. You can marvel at the interior of the cathedral and enjoy a breathtaking view from the dome.

For us, it’s one of the most beautiful views in Berlin, as there are no bars blocking the view and the view is completely unobstructed.

There are 267 steps to climb on the way up. But it’s all easy and the path is very wide. Not as bad as the towers in Tuscany and Florence, for example.

If you visit the Berlin Cathedral or the Humboldt Forum, you can’t miss the Berlin Art Market on Museum Island! It is located directly opposite the two buildings.

The market takes place Saturdays to Mondays from 11 am to 5 pm and offers a good platform for local and international artists to present and sell their works.

For example, you can find beautiful paintings, bags, interesting sculptures, photographs and prints. Really worthwhile and we never can resist buying something for home at such markets.

The Berlin Palace has been given a new face – the Humboldt Forum, a cultural and scientific centre that boasts a wealth of exhibitions, events and research projects.

It offers you an impressive range of topics dealing with the culture and history of the world. From collections from Asia, Africa and America to a permanent exhibition on the history of Berlin.

It is also an important platform for debates, lectures and conferences on various topics dealing with the role of culture and science in today’s society.

Note: You can spend several hours here and enjoy a wonderful panoramic view, similar to the Berlin Cathedral. However, the ascent is only open until 4:15 pm.

In our opinion, the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial is a must-see for all visitors to Berlin. The former prison and remand centre of the GDR’s State Security (Stasi) documents political persecution and repression in the GDR.

You should definitely take a guided tour of the former prison to learn more about the history and significance of the site.

The tour lasts about two hours and is usually conducted by former inmates or those affected. So you get a first-hand explanation of the gruesome history. It is hard to put into words what these people must have experienced and it is explained very clearly.

The memorial is considered a place of remembrance and reflection that should encourage you to look at the impact of the past on our society today.

Alternatively, or if you still have energy afterwards, you can visit the Stasi Museum.

Markthalle Neun is located in the trendy Kreuzberg district and is one of the city’s historic buildings. For us, the market was the most beautiful in the city.

You can shop for local food and culinary specialities from the region and indulge in culinary delights at some of the stalls. We were particularly impressed by the fresh pasta from “Mani in Pasta”. Add a glass of wine and the day is perfect.

If you can visit the market on a Thursday, then you will enjoy the STREET FOOD THURSDAY. The market is packed and there are many delicacies to try.

When you visit Berlin, you should definitely visit the city’s landmark. With a height of 368 metres, the TV Tower is the tallest building in Germany and offers a breathtaking view of the city.

From the top you can see the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and many other Berlin sights. The highlight is the sunset and the view at night, when the city shines in a sea of lights.

We watched the sunset with a glass of wine. It gets very crowded in the tower at this time. So it’s best to be there a little earlier.

To visit, you have to pass through a security check and are taken by lift to the viewing platform. There is a bar and information boards about the sights you can see. A bit old-fashioned, in our opinion, for the steep price. They could make it much more modern today.

You can also book a visit to the restaurant and enjoy the view from there.

If you have visited the TV Tower, then of course you can’t miss the World Clock. It is a popular attraction in Berlin and is located directly at Alexanderplatz.

The clock was built in the 1960s and shows the times in different time zones around the world. The colourful design of the clock is a unique example of the Eastern Modern style and a significant element of Berlin’s history.

24. Computerspiele Museum (Computer Game Museum) – Berlin Holiday

The Computerspiele Museum is a unique museum dedicated entirely to the history and culture of video games. It displays an impressive collection of game consoles, computers and arcade games from different decades.

You’ll have the chance to experience the history of video games up close, from its beginnings to the present day, and even try out some of the games yourself. You’ll find a giant joystick to play Pacman and consoles running Super Mario.

A highlight is the Painstation! The principle is simple. Two players play Pong against each other. During the game the left hand is placed on a plate. It emits heat impulses and electric shocks and a miniature whip integrated into the game console claps the hand. The first person to pull their hand away loses and gets punished. Brutal but fun.

The museum also offers interactive exhibitions, workshops and events. For all gaming and technology fans, the Computerspiele Museum is an absolute highlight during a visit to Berlin.

The Jewish Museum is dedicated to the history and culture of the Jews in Germany. It has an extensive collection of artworks, objects and documents depicting the history of Jews in Germany from its beginnings to the present day.

It really is a place of dialogue and encounter that is intended to help break down prejudices and promote understanding and tolerance.

Partly very informative, partly very depressing and some walk-through and interactive installations can get very close to one or the other. Especially the last part of the exhibition is very depressing.

The installation Schalechet (Fallen Foliage) by Menashe Kadishman has stayed in our minds the most. Over 10,000 faces with torn open mouths, cut out of heavy, round iron plates, cover the ground floor. You are allowed to walk across the slabs and the sounds they make in combination with the faces make you feel very uncomfortable.

You can take part in guided tours, workshops and events that give a deep understanding of Jewish history and culture.

We spent 2-3 hours there and by no means saw and read everything. So you should visit the museum a second and probably third time. Otherwise it will overwhelm you.

When it comes to Berlin’s most popular sights, Checkpoint Charlie is a must-see. This former border crossing between East and West Berlin was a symbol of the division of Germany during the Cold War.

Today, Checkpoint Charlie is a tourist attraction and a place to learn more about the city’s history.

Here you will find the Wall Museum, which is unfortunately very old-fashioned. We can’t recommend it. We found “BlackBox Cold War” and “DIE MAUER – asisi Panorama Berlin” much more exciting.

THE WALL – asisi Panorama Berlin is a cool 360-degree installation by artist Yadegar Asisi that offers a realistic view of life at the Berlin Wall.

You can explore the panorama and feel directly transported into the scenery. The panorama is housed in a former gasometer and shows a detailed replica of the Berlin Wall and its surroundings.

It is an impressive representation of an important part of Berlin’s history and a must-see for anyone interested in the history of the Wall.

The Topography of Terror is an exhibition and memorial that deals with the National Socialist reign of terror and its crimes.

It is located on the grounds of the former Gestapo and SS headquarters and offers insights into the unimaginable machinations of the Nazi regime.

Among other things, you can see original documents, photos and films as well as remains of the former buildings.

We highly recommend taking one of the free guided tours! These are on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 – 3 pm in German and 3:30 – 4:30 pm in English. Otherwise there is also an audio guide.

The tour is very informative and moving and the guide is of course happy to receive a tip.

Thanks to one of the fastest lifts in Europe, you can reach the 100-metre-high observation deck in just 20 seconds.

But the view is not the only highlight: an exhibition on the history of Potsdamer Platz and the opportunity to walk on a glass balcony above the city round off the experience. Venture on a “Window Walk” tour and experience Berlin from a completely new perspective!

Afterwards, you can take a look at the Sony Center.

Day 6 – A day on Museum Island

There is an incredible amount to see on Museum Island. Which museum do we recommend? Almost all of them. But if you have a limited window of time, check out the Pergamon Museum first, then the Neues Museum and the Panorama of the Pergamon Museum.

That’ll keep you busy for half a day. You will need 1-2 hours to visit each museum.

Note: You don’t have to buy a single ticket for each museum, but you can buy a combination ticket that is valid for one or more days.

We were particularly impressed by the famous Pergamon Altar and the gigantic Ishtar Gate. You simply have to see it.

The Neues Museum is located in the same building complex as the Pergamon Museum. It therefore makes sense to buy a combined ticket.

On display is an exciting collection of Egyptian, Greek and Roman works of art, as well as prehistoric artefacts and objects from European history.

One of the most famous exhibits is the bust of Nefertiti. Unfortunately, you are not allowed to photograph it. For whatever reason.

This 360-degree panoramic installation takes you to the ancient city of Pergamon in present-day Turkey. The installation is a circular painting that is 30 metres high and 110 metres long. By the way, the picture is by Yadegar Asisi, the same artist who created the panorama of the Berlin Wall (see Day 5).

However, this panorama is much more elaborate and detailed. It shows the life of the ancient city in the 2nd century AD and is an artistic representation of the architecture, art and culture of that time. Really well done!

The installation is located just a few steps away from the Pergamon Museum.

If you find the time, be sure to visit the Bode Museum. Here you will find an important collection of European art from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. Among them are sculptures, paintings, arts and crafts and coins.

A special highlight is the sculpture collection, which is one of the most important in the world. You can admire works by Michelangelo, Donatello and Giovanni Pisano, among others.

The imposing rooms of the museum are a highlight in themselves, including the impressive domed hall and the marble hall.

I was personally looking forward to this museum because I find the works of Caspar David Friedrich so impressive. His paintings show atmospheric sunsets and mountains shrouded in mist. Epic landscapes staged like today’s photographs.

Unfortunately, the floor with his works was closed on the day we visited. So we have to go there again.

Otherwise, you’ll find a large collection of paintings, sculptures and graphics from the Romantic, Realist, Impressionist and early Modernist periods.

Besides works by Caspar David Friedrich, there are also works by Auguste Renoir and Edvard Munch.

Charlottenburg Palace is a baroque palace in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. It was built in the 17th and 18th centuries and is considered one of the city’s most famous landmarks.

From the outside it looks rather unimpressive. Inside, you can visit the magnificent rooms and a large collection of paintings and sculptures.

This Church was badly damaged in the Second World War and partially rebuilt in the 1960s as a memorial for peace and to commemorate the destruction of the war.

Unfortunately the new church is a rather ugly concrete building with coloured glass windows and a prominent bell tower.

The ruins of the old church, which survived the war, now serve as a memorial and monument. It is worth a look inside for the beautiful mosaics and the story about the church. Entrance is free of charge.

The Victory Column stands in the Great Tiergarten and was built in the 19th century. It was commissioned by the Prussian King Wilhelm I after the German-Danish War and completed in 1873.

The imposing statue of Victoria is enthroned on the top and on the plinth are four golden reliefs depicting Prussia’s victories in various wars.

Via a spiral staircase with 285 steps you can reach the viewing platform at a height of 50 metres and enjoy a wonderful view over Berlin.

I always associate the Victory Column with the Love Parade in Berlin at the time. The many dancing people and party trucks that danced and drove around the Victory Column have stayed in my memory.

Admission costs 4 euros, the exhibition is unfortunately very dusty and not really worth seeing.

On it is a former US listening station that was used during the Cold War. Today, Teufelsberg is a place for art and culture.

You can climb it and have a great view of the city from there. Street artists in particular use the dilapidated buildings as a canvas for their artwork. There are regular guided tours and events on the grounds.

The stadium is famous for its design, which was influenced by the aesthetics of the Third Reich.

It is also known for its role as a venue for numerous international sporting events, including the 1974 FIFA World Cup and the 1988 UEFA European Football Championship.

We highly recommend taking a guided tour. There are themed tours on history or sports and clubs.

SECRET TIP: STADTBAD CHARLOTTENBURG – OLD HALL

Berlin in 3 to 7 days - The ultimate city guide with 41 great sights everyone should have visited! [+map] (91)

The historic Stadtbad Charlottenburg in Berlin is a little insider tip. But of course it’s only interesting if you want to go swimming.

It was opened in 1898 and has served as a public bath for Berliners ever since. It is a beautiful example of 19th century spa architecture.

The swimming pool inside the building is covered by an impressive dome. The furnishings and fittings of the baths are still largely in their original condition.

You can not only swim here, but also relax in the sauna or take part in various courses such as aqua fitness or water gymnastics.

Museum of Natural History

In the Museum of Natural History you will find an extensive collection of fossils, minerals, plants and animals, including the most famous exhibit, the skeleton of the Brachiosaurus.

The permanent exhibition deals with topics such as evolution, biodiversity and ecology and offers interactive and multimedia presentations. We personally find the stuffed animals a little dusty. Nevertheless, the museum is a must for young and old.

Best time to travel to Berlin

The best time to travel to Berlin depends on your individual preferences. In summer, between June and August, the city has a pleasant climate and many open-air events take place.

However, the city is also full of tourists and accommodation prices are often higher than in other seasons.

In spring and autumn, the weather is changeable, but it is less crowded and there are still many activities and events. Especially in spring, there is often still a nasty cold east wind blowing.

Winter is mostly cold and grey, but there are also many nice Christmas markets and other winter events in the city.

Public Transport & Mobility in Berlin

Berlin has a well-developed public transport network consisting of underground trains, suburban trains, trams and buses. Public transport is generally reliable and offers a quick and convenient way to explore the city.

To use it, you need either a single ticket, a day ticket or a weekly ticket. These are available at ticket machines in the stations and can also be purchased conveniently via the BVG app. As a rule, the AB fare is sufficient for you, so you can also travel to Wannsee, for example.

There are also bike rental stations in Berlin where you can rent a bike and explore the city on your own.

Another option is car sharing, which is very popular in Berlin and is offered by various providers. There are also taxis, which are usually safe and reliable, but can be a bit more expensive than other means of transport.
